About What We Do

The word Miromaa is an Awabakal word meaning: "to save, to stop from loss".
For our organisation this is referencing specifically stopping loss the of language and culture.

Miromaa Aboriginal Language & Technology Centre (MALTC) is a Newcastle-based, award-winning NGO. We empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across Australia and Indigenous people around the world in revitalising and conserving knowledge through language. Miromaa’s own unique software, tools and community-driven methods form the core of what we do.

Software orange

This easy-to-use software is Windows OS-based, assisting Indigenous people to gather, upload (text, images, audio, video) organise, analyse and produce outcomes for their language projects. The software license is delivered with “Your Language Journey - The Miromaa Way”, a community-focused, best practice revitalisation methodology.

Library orange

The MALTC library is one of the most extensive collections of Indigenous language and culture in Australia. With 2,500+ books and 15,000+ digital books, the public can visit and read and/or photocopy areas of interest (borrowing not available). MALTC’s rare collection of cultural books, art and objects is also on view. The digitisation of MALTC’s rare books is in progress.

Training orange

MALTC offers training and support (1) at MALTC premises; (2) On Country anywhere in the world; (3) By remote computer support tools. The training includes using Miromaa software features; digital archiving techniques; best practice for gathering language evidence; creating editing and managing images, text, audio and video.

Schools orange

Our Local Language Program focuses on the reclamation, conservation and sharing of the Awabakal language*. For schools MALTC offers a workshop program and provides teaching support materials for sale. MALTC also offers a cultural consultancy service to the public.
*The Awabakal people are the Traditional Owners of the Newcastle Region.

Puliima orange

MALTC is founder & host of one of the world’s largest Indigenous language conferences: Puliima National Indigenous Language and Technology Conference. This bi-annual 4-day event began in 2007. In 2019 it attracted 550+ delegates at the Darwin Convention Centre (National Media Partner: Aust. Broadcasting Commission ABC -  National & Local).

Mapping orange

MALTC trains Indigenous people how to use freely available tools from Google to allow you to create maps based upon language and knowledge. We also discuss the importance of language within documenting place name, flora and fauna knowledge, and the importance that our languages play in this to help us continue to care for Country.
