About What We Do

The word Miromaa is an Awabakal word meaning: "to save, to stop from loss".
For our organisation this is referencing specifically stopping loss the of language and culture.

Miromaa Aboriginal Language & Technology Centre (MALTC) is a Newcastle-based, award-winning NGO. We empower Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders across Australia and Indigenous people around the world in revitalising and conserving knowledge through language. Miromaa’s own unique software, tools and community-driven methods form the core of what we do.

This easy-to-use software is Windows OS-based, assisting Indigenous people to gather, upload (text, images, audio, video) organise, analyse and produce outcomes for their language projects. The software license is delivered with “Your Language Journey - The Miromaa Way”, a community-focused, best practice revitalisation methodology.

MAPPING: CULTURE & COUNTRY

MALTC trains Indigenous people how to use freely available tools from Google to allow you to create maps based upon language and knowledge. We also discuss the importance of language within documenting place name, flora and fauna knowledge, and the importance that our languages play in this to help us continue to care for Country.
